All we need to know is whether your home is “single phase” or “three phase”. Almost all residential homes in the United States are single phase, but it’s best to make sure. You can find out from your local power company, or take the grill off your breaker box as shown in the figure below. If your box has two large black wires coming into the box, and one white wire, then your home is wired “single phase”. If there are three large black wires coming into the box, and one white wire, then your home is wired “three phase”.
